Why therapy?

You’re here for a reason. Maybe it’s anxiety or depression, or you’re navigating a big transition. Maybe it’s relationship challenges or difficulty with intimacy. Maybe it’s substance use, or food, or sex, or money, or work. Maybe you’ve been thinking about trying therapy and are ready to see what it’s like. Maybe you’ve simply reached a point in your life where something needs to change.

Whatever the reason, psychotherapy can help you understand what’s going on beneath the surface to create lasting change. It’s a chance to learn how to relate to others and to yourself from a place of awareness and empowerment instead of frustration and doubt. It’s a space for you to get the support we all need to grow and thrive.

Psychotherapy is about changing how we relate to our problems, to others, and to ourselves.

About me

I’m a registered Associate Marriage & Family Therapist / AMFT 151334 and registered Associate Professional Clinical Counselor / APCC 18186 under supervision of Caroline McDowell / LMFT 47351. I’ve spent hundreds of hours working with clients dealing with relationship challenges, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, PTSD and C-PTSD, substance use, chronic illness, neurodivergence, gender identity, sexuality, aging, parenting, career changes, and emotional regulation. I’m also a former college professor with a PhD in sociology and gender studies. I’ve researched and written and taught about how social systems shape our internal experiences, and I’ve mentored hundreds of students as they moved through the confusing and stressful world of higher education. In both of these spaces, I’ve connected with people from all kinds of backgrounds in a way that honors their differences and recognizes their strengths.

I believe two things are true: you are inherently worthy of connection and a fulfilling life, and your past experiences have shaped how you see the world in ways that can make connection and fulfillment difficult. The work we do aims to integrate these truths with the issues you’re facing so you can navigate your life with more awareness, empowerment, and ease.

I practice relational psychodynamic psychotherapy, which means we'll look together at how your early experiences have shaped your relationships and sense of self, and how your unconscious beliefs show up in your everyday life.  Our work will vary depending on your needs, but it will always be inclusive, trauma-informed, and attuned to cultural differences.  It will prioritize lasting change over quick fixes.  It will be affirming, and it will be challenging.  It will open up new ways of seeing and being in relationship with others and with yourself.
